The Sunday of Months

August 14, 2023 By admin

“August is the slow, gentle month that stretches out the longest across the span of the year. It yawns and lingers on with the light in its palms.” – Victoria Erickson

Someone once said that August is the Sunday of months, and I don’t know about you, but I feel that. August in the South is tough. Back to school means new germs, new friends, and new schedules. Traffic resumes. Additionally, it’s still I-don’t-even-want-to-mention-how-many-degrees outside with no end in sight.

Keep Hydration Exciting with Agua Fresca!

As we start moving and grooving a little more, hydration can go to the wayside. When I find that I have one of my favorite blended bevies in the fridge, however, I’m sure to DRINK it!

Although directly translated to “fresh water”, it’s so much more than that. It’s made with whatever combo of fresh fruit, veggies, herbs you’d like, sugar, and water. The vitamins and minerals found in the whole fruit help the water absorb into your cells. It is rich in all the good stuff, plus fiber. This Mexican tradition has roots in centuries-old Aztec culture, where it’s said the Aztecs created the first agua frescas by muddling fruit and adding ice from nearby dormant volcanos.

My Favorite Fruits for Agua Fresca.

Watermelons are SO juicy, and they contain a blend of sugar and minerals that mimics the fluids in our body. This means the water that fills your watermelons can absorb into your cells more.

Berries and peaches are high in ORAC value, which means they contain a bounty of antioxidants that can help support the skin by protecting cells from oxidative stress from too much sun.

Cantaloupe, Apricots and Mangos are foods that are orange are high in beta carotene, which can also defend skin from sun exposure as well as support brain health.

Use any of these fruits, cucumbers, or coconut for yours. Add fresh lemon, lime, or herbs like mints, basils, or lavender. Play with the combos and find your favorite! Here’s the recipe for one of my faves :

Honeydew Mint Agua Fresca

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 cups of fruit (in this case, half of a honeydew)
  • 2-3 Sprigs of Mint
  • ⅛ – ¼ cup sweetener such as honey, sugar, or maple syrup.

Directions:

Add all ingredients to a blender and then fill the remainder with water and/or coconut water Blend. Pour over ice, and enjoy thoroughly and often!

Chill Out Your Nervous System Too

Our nervous systems could also use a break this time of year. We go from the sleepy pace of the dog days of summer to being pulled into the back-to-school or holiday chaos, all while it’s still face-melting degrees outside. (Spirit Halloween has already moved in for the season.)

Science has even proven that excessive heat can make tempers run hot and patience run short due to wreaking havoc on our serotonin levels. Grab your glass of agua fresca and settle in while I tell you about a couple of EZ Herbs products that can help clear that extra heat.

Last month I filled you in on the Be Cool Hibiscus Blend – always a favorite sun tea of mine to sip on this time of year. One ingredient in there is Passionflower vine, and it is one of my all-star summer plants – she is tenacious even in this heat, and her flowers and tiny tendrils offer a little reprieve to our eyes and taste buds.

Passiflora incarnata is a brilliant nervine, meaning it works wonders at cooling off an overly busy nervous system. It’s also known to be helpful at softly quieting a chatter-brain, which becomes a great tool to have at bedtime when thoughts of the day or to-do lists can overcome the mind, making it tough to wind down. I gathered my most recent harvest from a CommUnity Herbalism evening with Caroline of Mutable Earth Botanicals. She needed to clear it from a ramp and offered up the abundant vine to process together, and with a group of about 15 folks and herbal spritzers, we did it. Passionflower tincture is a mainstay in my bedside drawer, and I use it often when I find myself feeling overwhelmed.

Cool Your Jets tincture is a combo I blended out of necessity during a family emergency. The main ingredient is fresh milky oats, and when tinctured fresh as these are, they offer deep restoration and cooling to an overheated nervous system. Ashwagandha and lemon balm complement this blend by adding layers of nervine nourishment and immune system support. The addition of peach leaves brings an extra cooling down of internal heat. (If you’ve got a peach tree, grab some of these leaves and throw them into an infusion – they’ll keep you cool, AND they taste a bit like amaretto.) Think of this product when someone is experiencing burnout; the person that burns the candle at all the ends, the new mom that’s giving all she’s got with little rest in sight, the guy who just can’t seem to get deep, replenishing sleep.

One should never underestimate one’s own power. Little things you can do in the moment can quickly help regulate your own nervous system. One is grounding – putting bare feet onto grass, dirt or unpaved ground helps to bring calm upon the whole nervous system. Another is stimulating the vagus nerve, which runs all the way from our brain through our body and can help us exist in parasympathetic mode (think rest and digest) more easily. Things that tone this nerve, like humming, chanting, singing, and tapping or rubbing the neck and chest area can all help when overwhelming feelings start to set in. Last, harnessing the power of your breath is a simple one that is easily forgotten, it’s so automatic. Give yourself the gift of a few deep nasal breaths that fill up your belly, and are released through your mouth with a big sigh. Or maybe a fierce, loud ROAR if that’s what you’re feeling. Combine them all together for a truly zen moment.

I hope at least one of these suggestions will help bring the heat down inside you. The other side of summer is so close, so hang in there. And I’m always happy to hear from you – what are your favorite ways to keep calm and cool at the end of summertime?

With love and wishes for hydration and rain 🙂 – Corey Gusnowski

Keep Your Cool with Summer Plants

July 11, 2023 By admin

Nature has such a sweet way of caring for her inhabitants. During the hottest months of the year, she is abundant with plants holding secrets that favor the season of the fire element, summer. This is part of the key to eating seasonally – what is growing is often just the support we need during that particular season.

Cooling Fruits and Veggies

Since Summer is hot and dry, we want to consume things that are cool and moistening. Cucumbers are both. They thrive this time of year and are packed with nutrients that help us beat the heat and stay hydrated. Cucumbers contain a balance of minerals that help water absorb into the cells, making sure you hold onto the hydration you consume. They also contain a combo of vitamins A, C, and caffeic acid, which are soothing to inflamed or sunburnt skin. Berries, peaches, and melons also grow to be harvested in the heat of summer, and help keep the body protected from dehydration and overexposure to the sun, but more on this next month!

Cooling Herbs and Oils

Several herbs that grow in the heat are cooling herbs to the body, also known as refrigerant herbs. Hibiscus can help to clear excess heat in the body and is high in Vitamin C, which is abundant in our skin cells and plays a key role in their hydration. More vitamin C = more hydrated skin. Lemongrass oil is one of the best oils for cooling down the body’s temperature, and peppermint has this effect as well. Add a few sprigs of peppermint to your drink, or place a drop or two of peppermint oil onto a hanky and apply it to the back of your neck. Lavender flowers and oil will offer relief in this way as well, as it is included in the mint family. *Additional hot tip* Peach leaves are also a refrigerant and, when brewed in a tea-like fashion, offer a flavor similar to amaretto.

Here’s a recipe I love to keep on hand in my fridge. I make a fresh batch of this before our Summertime adventures outdoors, then keep it in my fridge for 2-3 weeks.

AFTER SUN SPRAY

Add to jar :

1/4 cup chopped cucumber

2-3 sprigs peppermint

1-2 stalks of Aloe (or a squirt from bottled gel)

If you’d like to add florals, a pinch of calendula, rose petals, and/or lavender flowers make a beautiful addition.

Place ingredients into an 8-ounce jar and fill with clean water and/or witch hazel. Shake well, put prayers and intentions into this elixir, and let refrigerate anywhere from 12-24 hours.

Once infused, strain and put the liquid into a spray bottle. This lasts for 2-3 weeks when kept in the fridge. If I’ve used fresh aloe and need it to last longer, I’ll add a bit of vodka or Everclear to the mix as a preservative.

How to Use After Sun Spray

Use this spray as needed while playing outdoors or post-sun exposure. If making your own isn’t really your jam, EZ Herbs Queen of Hungary Spray is a lovely option. A centuries-old remedy infused with herbs that heal skin cells (Calendula and Chamomile) and cool off heat (Roses, Lavender, and Sage). If you like to keep it simple, we also offer plain Rose Water. Both of these sprays are in a base of witch hazel, an herb that contains tannins that reduce redness and inflammation,  making them perfect for a little-too sunkissed skin. Place either in the fridge for a spritz of guaranteed “Aaaaaaaaah”.

Other Tips to Beat the Heat

Of course, drinking plenty of water is also important to prevent and treat sunburn. If you are dehydrated, your skin will burn more easily. Toss a few cuke slices and some sprigs of peppermint into your water to level up your hydration game. Another option is to add EZ Herbs Be Cool Hibiscus Blend into your regular consumption routine. If you live in the South, having hibiscus in your pantry is a MUST due to the long term heat. This loose leaf herbal beverage is made to keep you even cooler than you already are and contains previously mentioned herbs like hibiscus, lemongrass, and peppermint. The additions of lavender, lemon balm, and passionflower kick up the flavor profile and nervous system support, which can get overheated in the summertime, just like our bodies. And best of all, it makes a delicious sun tea.

I’m hoping these suggestions offer a remedy to some of the summer challenges that might pop up. If there are any other herbal remedies to summer quandaries you might have questions about, I am happy to help. Shoot an email over to ezherbsatx@gmail.com and we’ll chat. Until next time, wishing you a cool, hydrated and protected summer.

New Goodies and Upcoming Markets

December 1, 2021 By admin

Hello out there fellow herb lovers and wild ones. I certainly hope this time of year is finding you feeling calm and happy, wrapped in gratitude and sparkling greenery. Certain smells float around us more often to dust off musty memories that were stored away like sweaters during warmer months. Cinnamon and apples, citrus, crisp woodlands, and bonfire smoke – these are a few of my favorite things.

Another favorite of mine that would grace my lips during these cooler months is the Hot Toddy. I’m not a drinker these days, but I’ve had it on my mind for some time to infuse herbs into medicinal whisky blend, particularly using Mullein, due to it’s respiratory soothing properties. This year, I went for it and after a little tweaking the results are in. It’s fabulous. Welcome to the family, Toddy Tincture. Mullein, Lemon Balm, Lemon Peel and Cloves are infused into Makers Mark Bourbon Whisky. Reminiscent of the classic Hot Toddy when added to hot water with a touch of honey and fresh lemon, it’s also enjoyable and efficient on its own. The herbs included are known to be helpful for sticky or spasmodic coughs, as well as ones that are dry or lingering. It offers a soothing touch to an prickly throat, overworked lungs and irritated nervous system.

Toddy Tincture hanging with a Mullein plant.

Another newbie that I am ready to introduce is Melt & Mend Salve, a topical infusion of hand-harvested herbs with warming and healing properties like Juniper, Goldenrod, Comfrey and Chili Pequin. This blend is meant to melt the most stubborn of your sore spots. This affinity towards warmth increases blood flow to the area, bringing with it oxygen as well as delivering herbal goodness and nutrients that assist with restoration and renewal.

UPCOMING MARKETS :

Bertram Country Christmas

Saturday December 4th 10am – 4pm in Historic Downtown Bertram

Winter Solstice Market

Sunday December 19th 11am – 4pm at Cultivate Holistic Homestead

I’ll have these new products available, as well as my classics and some super small batch specials like a Calendula + Salt Bath Soak, High Energy Chai Spiced Honey, and Lavender-Infused Raw Texas Honey. Classic babes, Queen of Hungary Water and Rose Water, will be available in smaller 2 ounce glass spray bottles, small enough to pop into a bag and join in on any upcoming Winter adventures. I’d love for you to swing by and see what else I might have up my sleeve. Connecting at markets, answering your questions and sharing what I’ve learned is my sweet spot – it’s what lights me up. If you’re a fan or have any questions, I’d love to meet you and hear what you’ve got to say!

UPCOMING CLASSES :

You can also find me leading a Fire Cider Making class with fellow Herbalist and dear friend Meghan Dwyer. What is Fire Cider? Well, it’s a traditional health tonic that supports digestion as well as the immune system. We’ll cover a bit of history and folklore as well as how it’s used, then you’ll brew up your own! You’ll combine roots like ginger & horseradish with citrus, peppers, garlic, and other potent herbs and spices, then we’ll cover it with Apple Cider Vinegar and discuss what happens next! Offered at Casa de Luz on Sunday, December 12th from 5pm – 6pm. Tickets are available through Third Eye Meditation Lounge.

SBBC NEWS

I’m hoping to make time for some sweet family crafts with my little – decorating brown paper for wrapping gifts. Did you know that most of that glittery, shiny paper is not recyclable and ends up in the landfill? Using old ribbon, stamps, markers, paint and dried fruit slices we’ll transform shopping bags into magnificent, unique wrapping paper that will also be recyclable. Now here’s to hoping it’s a smooth experience and fun is had by all. *My work through Small Business for Big Change includes a container reuse program, and I take back glass bottles and jars to sterilize and reuse. You are welcome to bring these to a market or class to return to me. Follow @sbbc_community for more eco-friendly holiday tips. You’ll also learn more about how we are building a community of small businesses that are taking real action and putting the dollars you spend towards following more sustainable and eco-conscious practices and giving back to the planet.

Follow EZ Herbs on Instagram or Facebook to keep up with the daily happenings over here in the plant magic space. I share even more with you there about herbal happenings around town, and how your products are grown, harvested and made. Please be sure, dear ones, that in this season when we focus on the care of so many others, that you take the time to also care for yourself.

Summer into Fall

October 7, 2020 By admin

Autumn – the time of harvest. The equinox has come and gone, signaling longer nights and more relief from the arid Texas Summer. The shift of seasons has kicked in a creative streak in me, and I have been playing around with plants and potions fit for the colder months and holiday season. New offerings coming up will include infused honeys, bath soaks and concoctions to keep you healthy and cozy. (Be sure you are following me on social media so you’ll know when these are available!)

I am also happy to report that EZ Herbs has been included in the carefully curated selection of botanical remedies available at Earth Commons. This space feels open, grounded and oh so good PLUS they have a shop doggy! EZ Herbs products couldn’t feel more at home here. Earth Commons has a very special vision of how they would like support their surrounding community. Through gatherings, classes, private consultations and stewardship of the land, they make it “easier for people to navigate their own wellness and to build a supportive community.”

The product lineup they brought in includes 5 formulas: Think Plus, helpful for keeping you sharp while we muddle through these new school and work days. Better Bitters, to keep your digestion up to par as the seasons and the foods we consume change. Peaceful Spirit, a blend of herbs that keep your heart light and your spirit calm, letting your parasympathetic nervous system reign. MenopEZful, a tincture made from plants known to help smooth the ups and downs of this major life transition. Black Salve, a topical formula that works wonders on stubborn infections, spider bites and skin growths. If you’re local to Austin, I highly recommend dropping into their space to say hello and peruse the high-quality and often handmade goodies on their shelves.

Speaking of earth, as the weather cools our soil is relieved of excess heat, setting it right to germinate a new crop of seeds. The leaves float down, creating natural mulch to protect the web of life below our feet through the winter. I am in the 3rd week of a Medicinal Gardening class being taught by a sweet friend, fellow herbalist and experienced gardener, Caroline Carberry. We recently covered a section on the condition of soil on planet Earth, and how extremely important the health of it is. I also learned that it is degrading at a very quick rate.

That lesson was amplified when I watched the recently released documentary Kiss the Ground – I officially have a new obsession with this very necessary microbiome. To summarize : Soil is becoming dirt, devoid of life and nutrients. Without healthy, bacteria-rich soil, we do not have vitamin-packed produce, or even earth that is fit to root into. We have loose dirt that won’t absorb water but rather floats away with it, causing even more erosion of topsoil (we’ve already lost 1/3 of it across the earth). This is not a doom-and-gloom documentary though. It is a call to action, offering a surprisingly simple solution that is “old as dirt”. I highly recommend that everyone take an hour and a half to give it a watch. *Streaming on Netflix and rentable through the website* It has given me more hope for our future on this planet, and a new vision of land stewardship that I look forward to developing more.

Until next time, I’m sending many green blessings and wishes that you and yours stay well. -Corey
